This monograph documents the complete manufacturing know-how of marine cutless bearings developed at the RRIM Technology Centre and the successful transfer of this technology to a local firm, A feasibility study is also made to consider the viability of setting up a new factory capable of producing 18 000 units of cutless bearings a year. Based on this study, it is indicated that a new factory with an initial paid up capital of M$900 000 is viable with an internal rate of return of 31% and a pay back period of under four years. Two local factories have already started commercial production of marine cutless bearings, enabling Malaysia to be self-sufficient. As a result of this timely product development and in ensuring self-sufficiency, an estimated half a million dollars per year is saved in foreign exchange
