Description: Attention is drawn to the practical importance of establishing the response of the crosslinking efficiency of sulphur vulcanising systems to changes in the total sulphur and accelerator concentrations,to changes in sulphur:accelerator ratio,and to changes in cure temperature.Quantitative data are given for a sulphenamide accele- rator for changes of the first two types.In each case the dependence is seen to be complex.The decrease in crosslinking efficiency with cure temperature between 140 ° C and 200°C is similar for conventional and efficient vulcanising systems in spite of the much higher reversion resistance of the latter.Contrary to previous belief, it is shown that in neither case do network degradation reactions make a major contri- bution to the observed loss of efficiency which is now ascribed either to an intrinsic Property of the rubber or,more probably,to some change in the balance of vulcanisation kinetics preceding crossllinking - possibly in the rate of desulphuration of the pendent group precursors to crosslinks.The modulus reversion observed in efficient systems at high temperatures is associated with scission of the monosulphide crosslink itself or of the main chain in its immediate vicinity.
