- Description
- High damping rubber bearings provide an attractive means of isolating structures from the damaging effects of horizontal ground shaking during an earthquake. They are simple devices that should require no maintenance and yet last for several decades. Their relatively low cost and ease of installation enables the benefits of base-isolation as a means of earthquake protection to be extended to ordinary civil buildings such as apartment blocks. A recent project in Armenia has involved the retrofitting of high damping bearings to an existing apartment block. This technique was shown to be much cheaper than conventional strengthening methods and had the advantage that the inhabitants could remain in-situ. The paper outlines the design of the isolation system and the individual bearings. The properties of the rubber and the bearings are presented. The building is located in a region where the severe winter conditions lead to prolonged low temperature spells, necessitating the development of a high damping rubber more resistant to low temperature crystallization than normal.
