Description: A lysimeter experiment was conducted using two types of soil (with and without rubber seedlings) and different levels of effluent to study the capacity of soil and soil-plant systems in filtering-off the pollutants (including the nutrient elements) and in ensuring cleaner properties of the percolate water. In addition, the effects of field-irrigation of effluent on groundwater properties were investigated using PVC-made tubewells. Results obtained indicate that soil and plant together form a fairly effective biosystem capable of purifying the pollutant-laden effluent, the effectiveness depending on the soil types and more important on the rates of effluent applied. Direct comparison between the effluent and the percolate and groundwater properties using the relevant pollutant indices show effective entrapment of most of the pollulants by the soil resulting in the accumulation of especially total and available phosphorus and total and exchangeable potassium, calcium and magnesium in the soil and low readings of these nutrients together with ammonium-nitrogen, COD and BOD values in the percolate and groundwater. Efficient uptake of the nutrients by the plants as reflected in the better growth and yield responses was observed. However, further investigation is required to confirm the marked increase in the nitrate-nitrogen content of the percolate water and decrease in the acidity of soil. This can be a setback to land-application of rubber effluent.
