Description: One of the major flaws of natural rubber (NR) is poor ozone and ageing resistance besides poor oil and chemical resistance. These weaknesses are contributed by the double bonds present in the rubber molecules. However the number + of double bonds can be reduced by hydrogenation process. This paper illustrates the effect of types of latices used as starting materials on the efficiency of hydrogenation. This paper also discusses effect of hydrogen peroxide on the degree of + hydrogenation. The hydrogenated NR was prepared by reacting NR latex with hydrazine hydrate and hydrogen peroxide. The rubber was characterized by using proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). The results showed significant effects of types of latices + and hydrogen peroxide concentration on hydrogenation level. The optimum level of hydrogen peroxide concentration observed to be 30% in all type of latices. By using field latex as starting material, high hydrogenation level archived (70%) compared to + other type of latices.
