Description: A comparative study is presented of the use of reclaim and rubber powder (45 MESH and 60 MESH) in three different tread compounds, i.e. a truck tread based on NR, a precured tread compound based on SBR/polybutadiene and a + silica-containing passenger car tread based on SBR/polybutadiene. The advantages of using the fine powder are discussed, including the effect of the high surface activity of the powder on the mechanical properties of the compound, the improved mould + release when the powder is used in silica-based tread compounds, and cost savings. The main disadvantage of the addition of the MESH 60 powder versus the reclaim is the increase in Mooney viscosity.
