Description: The universal occurence of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhiza in feeding roots of Hevea brasiliensis Muell. Arg. is reported. Similarities are shown with infections known, in other hosts, to be caused by species of Endogone. + Penetration of the root is from external hyphae: the infection develops in the cortex, and remains intact until secondary thickening occurs. Evidence is given against an earlier suggestion that Macrophomina phaseoli is the endophyte. Endotrophic + infections in other plants grown in association with Hevea are recorded. Resting spores resembling those of species of Endogone have been recovered from soil and litter, but attempts to germinate these and to culture the root endophyte were unsuccessful.+ Seedlings of Hevea in pots readily become infected with the endophyte from soil and from mycorrhizal rubber roots, but no evidence has been found of either a beneficial or harmful effect on their growth.
