Description: The smallholder sector is playing an increasingly important role in the nation’s natural rubber (NR) production, contributing about 70% of the total annual production with the estate sector contributing the remainder. In 1990, out of the total production of 1.292 million tonnes, 69.1% was from the smallholder sector. In terms of total planted area under rubber, smallholdings occupied about 80% (1,493,400 ha) while 361,800 ha were under estates. However, the yield gap between the estate and smallholder sector is still significant. This disparity can be attributed to fast adoption of speculative clones, high quality planting materials coupled with good agronomic practices in the estate sector. One of the most effective way to narrow this yield gap is to hasten the adoption of these technologies in the smallholder sector.
