Description: Over recent years the approach to root disease control has been reversed; instead of looking back towards the source of infection, we look forward to the sites of future colonisation that need protection; instead of tracing out and eradicating diseased old stumps in a young replanting, we advise concentrating efforts on preventing the infection from becoming established on the young stand. Unless the root disease fungi can make the transference from the old to the new stand they die out; they cannot live in the soil except within woody tissue. Because of this it is feasible to free a plantation of the major root disease fungi, Fomes lignosus, Ganoderma pseudoferreum and Fomes noxius, widespread as they are and destructive though they have been over the years.
